Wavelength locking is critical in applications such as DWDM networks with narrow channel spacing (50GHz or less), where high channel counts require precise, stable wavelength definition. Avanex optical receivers, which convert pulses of light into electrical signals at the end of an optical link, are designed to save space and cost while offering high flexibility to system designers. Avanex manufactures Lithium-Niobate external modulators for advanced optical telecommunication systems. An external modulator imposes a signal on a light beam passing through the modulator by switching between transparent and opaque modes. In so doing, modulators encode information being transmitted through a waveguide to optically create and shape information as it enters the photonic realm. The advanced 2.5Gb/s, 10Gb/s and 40Gb/s modulators are designed specifically for applications in emerging DWDM systems where cost, size and performance are key factors. Moreover, Lithium Niobate is transparent to wavelengths, opening the “tunable" DWDM systems. Avanex solutions for transmission are designed for long-haul, metro, enterprise and access markets, and for operation at SONET OC-48 and OC-192 rates, 10GbE as well as at ITU-T SDH rates of STM-16 and STM-64 and below.
